Haunted West, a Historical Weird West RPG Corebook

Created by Chris Spivey, Darker Hue Studios

One moment sets the course of destiny. But what if that one moment was changed in the smallest of ways? What if one madman's plan actually were to succeed beyond our known history? The Old West—The Wild West, The American Frontier—is one of the world’s most familiar modern myths. The time was draped in ruggedness; there was an idealized dream of freedom, and a notion that just one person could shape the world. That myth belongs to all of us. Yet so many stories of truth, justice, and the American Way have been stolen, erased, and never recorded. Haunted West is a game about hope through struggle. It is a game that pieces together the stories of the largely forgotten people of the Old West, the people who have been whitewashed by history. Discover the American experience in the Weird West. Grab your rifle, jet pack, and spurs to battle traitorous rebels in the defense of freedom, join the fight against temporally displaced dinosaurs, rustle cattle to make ends meet, and hijack a train full of illicit Confederate gold!

Howdy Partners,

The Backerkit rodeo closes out in a couple days. You still have time to add a little more swag, and that warbag which is mighty fine! Once Backerkit closes, I’ll figure out numbers, and reach out at the start of the new year to those excellent folks who are going to play Haunted West via the Rail Pass or at Gen Con 2020.

Do you know someone who missed the Kickstarter? Send them to our pre-order store which also closes December 10th.

The holiday season is upon us and the Darker Hue Ranch is going to be closed for a few weeks while the crew recuperates, and then we'll continue on the hard ride to the publisher in the following months.

We wish you happy holidays and much spiked eggnog.

See you next year,

Chris

If you haven’t already completed your Backerkit, well, what are you waiting for? As they say in that great cowboy (18)90s power ballad, “Git Along, Little Dogies!” You should have already received an email from Backerkit with your link.

Howdy Paragons,

Hope you fine folks had a couple of good weeks. We’re still reviving from the Kickstarter here over at the Spivey Ranch.

We called in a new posse from Backerkit to help round out the last few miles of the Kickstarter journey. The survey from Backerkit is coming your way in about five minutes.

Feel free to email me at [email protected] ( mailto:[email protected] ) if you have any questions.

Thank you all again for supporting, believing, and joining us on this journey.

See you on range, Chris

Haunted West Reference List: A Beginning
over 4 years ago – Mon, Nov 18, 2019 at 09:19:36 PM

People have asked what books I am using as reference materials for Haunted West. The answer includes dozens upon dozens of resources. Much of history is written about straight white people which means you’ve got tons of material to dig through in order to find the real history.

Part of the process is just finding the right person, topic, or subject that opens a doorway to another few threads to chase down. I personally always review the bibliography of any book, as I appreciate how much time goes into researching.

Haunted West will include a lot of material the team and I have explored. I plan to drop book mentions over the next few months. Here is the first one with some easy ones. Happy digging!

The Black West
Chinese Yankee
Frontiers: A Short History of the American West
Re-Dressing America’s Frontier Past
An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States
National Geographic: The Old West

Cheers,

Chris
